Introduction to Video - PAL, NTSC, SECAM

Explain the video standards PAL, NTSC and SECAM. What are the main differences between them?

PAL - Phase Alternating Line
Is a an analog encoding system used in broadcasting television systems. This particular system is used more than any other system in the world.

NTSC - National Television System Committee
Is an analog encoding system used in broadcasting television systems. This system is most commonly used in North America, most countries in South America and in a few countries in Asia.

SECAM - Sequential Colour with Memory (or Sequentiel couleur a memoire)
Is an analog colour system first used in France. Henri de France and his team invented SECAM. Historically, it is the first ever colour television standard in Europe.

Each standard is incompatible with the other. For example, as the Northern American standard is NTSC a person from Australia will have to convert a video from America in order to watch it on an Australian TV.
